Works to significantly strengthen State Highway 2 High Street, making it more resilient and safer for all road users, begin from Monday 3 June for approximately five weeks, weather dependent.

Dates may change at short notice due to weather or other impacts on our week’s schedule.

Thank you for your patience while we make These road safety improvements in your community.

Approximate order of works

We will be working in sections to avoid larger disruption. The approximate schedule is:

  • Rhodes Street to Kent Street – we’ll do the northbound side, followed by southbound side. This should take approximately 2-3 weeks.
  • Kent Street to south of Andersons Line – we’ll do the northbound side, followed by southbound side. This should take approximately 2-3 weeks.

Rhodes Street to south of Andersons Line residents

When the works is happening outside residents and businesses, there will be no access available for private vehicles to properties for up to 5 days and nights. Due to the extensive works, it is unsafe for vehicles to drive over the road and through the works. We will manage access for residents and businesses if there is an emergency. Pedestrian access to properties is available and the footpath will be open. When access is unavailable due to works, vehicles will need to park down the road or down the side streets nearby.
If you are elderly, have a disability or mobility issues, please contact us so we are aware in advance to support where possible.

Location of roadworks

The works will be between Rhodes Street, and south of Andersons Line. All residents and  businesses who are located in this area will have access restrictions up to 5 days. This includes 222 – 282 High Street North and 229 – 281 High Street North and Plimsoll Street [see maps below].

Somerset Road/Carters Line/Park Road residents

Residents on these roads will notice heavier than usual traffic going past their houses because this is the main detour route for around 5 weeks.

Detours for vehicles driving south

For the duration of the works, all vehicles who are travelling south will need to take the detour via Somerset Road, Carters Line and Park Road. In good traffic, this adds around 8 minutes to journey times. Vehicles heading north can drive through High Street with speed restrictions in place.

Rubbish and recycling during roadworks

  • Leave Council rubbish and recycling bags and bins out as normal.
  • Contact other suppliers for further information on their service.
