Carterton District Council has unanimously resolved to name a new road in the District after Georgina Beyer, our former Mayor, MP, and human rights champion.

Mayor Hon. Ron Mark and Councillors agreed to three new road names in a development in the township at an extraordinary council meeting today [Wednesday 8 March].

They are Kākāriki Crescent, Peaks Avenue, and Georgina Beyer Way.

The meeting was called for Council to consider the road names, part of a residential subdivision off Kent Street in Carterton.

Corsair Developments submitted its choices of names in November 2022.  They were Peaks Avenue, Kākāriki Crescent, and Beyer Way.

The latter was named to mark the developers’ friendship and respect for Ms. Beyer, a former Mayor of Carterton, Member of Parliament, and an internationally recognised advocate for LGBTIQA+ rights, and Māori rights.

Ms. Beyer passed away two days before the meeting. A book of condolence is available to sign at Carterton Events Centre.

After an amendment to the recommendation made by Mayor Mark, agreed with the developers and other friends of Ms. Beyer, the name of the proposed road was changed to Georgina Beyer Way.

Council adopted the amended recommendation unanimously.

Council officers will now notify the District Land Registrar and Chief Surveyor, following Section 319A Local Government Act 1974.
