About the Park

It is a flat landscaped area with open lawn areas and a meandering asphalt pathway running between the two streets with specimen trees and mixed native plants around the boundary lines.

There is seating, a playground area with equipment, and solar lighting runs along the pathway.

Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash and there is a water drinking spout with a water bowl for animals.

On the Charles Street entrance, amongst the native planted garden, stand four round pipes of differing heights decorated in coloured mosaic tiles depicting native flora and fauna scenes.

The project was undertaken by the local Wai Art and the Carterton community was invited to glue the tiles to the pipes.

History

Early in 2016 Carterton District Council purchased two adjoining properties on Frederick and Charles Streets from the Bird Family to create a local neighbourhood park in the southern part of town.

The park was named after Elfred and Hazel Bird for their community work in Carterton.
