Understanding the Local Water Done Well Consultation
Local Water Done Well is about making sure our water services are safe, sustainable, and affordable – now and in the future. We’re required to prepare a Water Service Delivery Plan [WSDP], which means looking at:
- the current state of Carterton’s water services.
- how we ensure safe drinking water, reliable wastewater, and stormwater management.
- what model will best support growth, compliance, and long-term affordability.
Key Decision: Choosing a Water Service Model
We need to decide how Carterton’s water services will be delivered, and there are two options:
- Preferred Option – Forming a Council-Controlled Organisation [CCO]: Partnering with neighbouring Masterton, South Wairarapa, and Tararua District Councils to form a new Wairarapa-Tararua entity managing our water services.
- Alternative Option Continuing to manage our own water services delivery.
With bigger infrastructure projects ahead and increasing Government regulations through Taumata Arowai, we need the best setup to manage Carterton’s water needs effectively.
-
Our preferred option: A new joint council controlled water services organisation.
-
Option 2: Carterton District Council continues to deliver water services to our community.
