A Red Wind Warning is in place for areas south of Carterton, with winds expected to reach up to 140 km/h, and up to 150–160 km/h on the Remutaka Hill. Carterton and areas north still have an Orange Wind Warning, with gusts expected up to 120 km/h from 8am to 6pm Thursday (tomorrow 23 October). A Heavy Rain Warning is also in effect for the Tararua Ranges from 10am to 8pm Thursday.
- Carterton Library will be closed on Thursday (tomorrow 23 October).
- The CDC office will remain open, unless a power outage occurs. This will be reassessed tomorrow morning.
- In case of tree damage and blocked roads please be aware our crews may not be able to clear some sites until winds ease and it is safe to work under unstable trees. We appreciate your patience.
Advice to Residents:
- Prepare to work from home and avoid unnecessary travel.
- Check travel routes and public transport before leaving home, be prepared for disruptions. Note the Remutaka Hill may close.
- Secure outdoor items such as trampolines, bins, and BBQs.
- Prepare for power outages. If you rely on electricity for medical devices, contact your provider to arrange backup.
- Avoid parks and recreation areas due to risk from falling tree limbs.
- A total fire ban is in place for Wellington and Hawke’s Bay regions.
- Check on neighbours, friends, and whānau, if it’s safe to do so.
- Stay away from windows and doors during strong winds.
- Clear stormwater drains to reduce flooding risk, if it’s safe to do so.
- Have an evacuation plan and grab bag ready.
- Make a plan for pets and livestock.
