With the warmer weather upon us, it’s a good time to be aware of a natural phenomenon called Sudden Branch Drop (SBD). This is when large tree branches unexpectedly fall, even from healthy-looking trees, usually on hot, calm days. It’s very rare, but it can happen.
Experts believe SBD is linked to heat stress and internal tree conditions. Factors may include:
High temperatures and moisture changes
Natural self-pruning during heat stress
Hidden internal weaknesses such as decay or cracks
Some species, like willow, eucalyptus, oak, and sycamore, are more prone to this.
What should you do?
When it’s very hot and still, avoid sitting or parking directly under large trees.
Stay alert for any signs of stress, such as cracking sounds or hanging branches.
If you notice fallen branches or have concerns about a tree, please let us know.
Our team regularly monitors trees in public spaces and will continue to do so throughout summer.
Sudden Branch Drop is rare, but awareness helps keep everyone safe while enjoying our beautiful outdoor areas.
