Thursday 23 October, 6.30pm | Severe Weather Update
Strong winds across Wairarapa have now eased, and conditions are improving this evening.
State Highway 2 over the Remutaka Hill is now OPEN to all traffic, following the clearance of several small slips and rockfalls. Drivers are still urged to take care, as debris and strong gusts may remain in exposed areas. Unnecessary travel should still be avoided.
State Highway 2 between Mount Bruce and Eketahuna has also reopened, and all state highways in the lower North Island are now open.
Council teams and contractors continue to check local roads and clear debris where it is safe to do so. Please continue to drive with caution, particularly around trees and power lines.
If you see downed power lines, stay well clear (at least 10 metres) and call Powerco on 0800 272 727 or 111 in an emergency.
Power remains out for some homes in Carterton and South Wairarapa. Please continue to check on neighbours, friends, and whānau, especially those who may need extra support. If you or someone you know relies on medication that requires refrigeration, contact your local pharmacy for advice on safe storage and viability.
If life or property is at risk, call 111.
