The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment has announced legislation before Parliament that will make it easier to build small standalone dwellings [often known as granny flats].
Under the proposed changes, these homes could soon be built without the need for a building or resource consent.
If you’re planning to build now, you’ll still need to go through the usual consent process. And once the exemption does become law (expected early 2026), you’ll need to meet strict criteria to qualify. If any of those requirements aren’t met, you’ll still need consent as usual.
Planning ahead? Talk to your bank and insurer to understand your finance and cover options. Don’t miss the chance to plan smart now and build with confidence later.
