Our Animal Control team have put together this handy checklist to remind us all of best practice dog ownership over summer.
Heat and exercise
☐ Walk early morning or late evening
☐ Avoid exercise during 11am–4pm
☐ Check ground temperature (5-second hand test)
☐ Provide shade and airflow at home & outdoors
☐ Reduce high-intensity play (ball chasing, running)
Heatstroke awareness
☐ Know signs: heavy panting, drooling, wobbling, bright red gums, vomiting, collapse
☐ Emergency plan: move to shade, offer cool water, wet with cool (not icy) water, call vet
Sun protection
☐ Apply dog-safe sunscreen to nose, ears, belly, groin, thin or light patches
☐ Limit sunbathing time
☐ Use shade structures (umbrellas, trees, canopies)
Hot car safety
☐ Never leave dog alone in a vehicle
☐ Use sunshades & ventilation during travel
☐ Carry water for rest stops
Hydration
☐ Keep fresh water available at all times
☐ Take a portable bowl on walks
☐ Offer frequent breaks during play
☐ Avoid seawater drinking
Water safety
☐ Supervise swimming; not all dogs can swim
☐ Use a dog life jacket when boating
☐ Avoid water with algae, scum, or bad smell (risk of blue-green algae)
☐ Rinse dog after swimming and dry ears
On-lead and outdoor awareness
☐ Keep on lead near hot roads, cliffs, livestock, or dangerous water
☐ Monitor for overexertion
☐ Check for hot sand or decking
Cooling aids
☐ Cooling mat or damp towel
☐ Paddling pool or shaded water play
☐ Frozen treats (dog-safe fruit, frozen broth)
