Be a Road Safety Hero this Road Safety Week

Road Safety Week is back for 2025, running from 12 to 18 May, and this year’s theme – Be a Road Safety Hero – is a good reminder that we all have a role to play in keeping Carterton’s roads safe for everyone. Whether you’re driving, cycling, or walking, road safety is a shared responsibility.

Cycling is a healthy, sustainable way to get around, but our riders need support and awareness from other road users to stay safe, see a few top tips below to consider.

When you’re driving – Be a Road Safety Hero by:

  • Giving cyclists at least 1.5 metres when passing
  • Checking your blind spot for cyclists before opening your door
  • Slowing down near schools, playgrounds and residential areas
  • Being patient – cyclists may need to avoid potholes, parked cars or other hazards

When you’re cycling – Be a Road Safety Hero by:

  • Using lights and reflective gear in dull, dark or wet conditions
  • Always wearing a helmet
  • Riding predictably, following the rules, and signalling clearly
  • Watching out for other road users and hazards

To help our youngest road users stay safe and be seen, we’re giving away free high-vis safety vests for kids!
Pick up a vest from the Wairarapa Events Centre during Road Safety Week – while stocks last.
