KiwiRail has implemented a temporary 10kph speed restriction for all trains travelling through the Kent St level crossing in Carterton.
“Our signals maintenance team has confirmed there is an issue with the signals at Kent St,” KiwiRail Wellington metro network general manager Andy Lyon said.
“We are investigating the cause of the fault, and the speed restriction will stay in place until we’ve completed our investigation and are confident that the signals are operating correctly and consistently over time.”
The speed restriction would allow train drivers to stop safely if there was a problem, he said, but motorists should take care when approaching a level crossing. For signal-related issues, the public can contact KiwiRail on the train control emergency number: 0800 808 40
While the risk to the public remains low, drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians are asked to:
- Approach the Kent Street crossing with care
- Look both ways before crossing
- Be prepared to stop if a train is approaching
KiwiRail crews are working to resolve the issue, and further updates will be provided as soon as more information is available.
