Carterton District Council proudly welcomed eight new New Zealand citizens at a special ceremony in late May, celebrating their journey and commitment to making Aotearoa home.

Hosted at the Wairarapa Events Centre, the ceremony was led by Deputy Mayor Steve Cretney and attended by whānau, friends, and Council representatives. The event followed a culturally rich programme that included a karanga, haka pōwhiri, and waiata.

Deputy Mayor Cretney acknowledged the importance of the milestone for each new citizen.
“It’s a real privilege to be part of such an important step in a person’s life. Citizenship is more than a formality – it represents connection, belonging, and a shared future. We’re honoured that you’ve chosen New Zealand as your home.”

Carterton School played a key role in making the ceremony special, offering a powerful haka pōwhiri and leading waiata throughout the event, helping to create a meaningful and uniquely Aotearoa experience. The Council extends its sincere thanks to the students and staff for their support.

The new citizens represent a vibrant mix of backgrounds and cultures. Those welcomed at the ceremony include:

  • Scott Abbott – originally from Australia
  • Lesley Brown – originally from England
  • Helen Buhler – originally from South Africa
  • Alister Buhler – originally from South Africa
  • Alina Effner – originally from Germany
  • April Freeman – originally from the United Kingdom
  • Astrid Rung – originally from Argentina
  • Dawn Ruttenberg – originally from South Africa

Following the official proceedings, which included the Oath or Affirmation of Citizenship, a message from the Governor-General, and the singing of the national anthem, the ceremony concluded with photos, kai, and a chance for everyone to celebrate together.

Carterton District Council extends a heartfelt congratulations to our newest citizens.
