Carterton District Council was delighted to welcome a new group of residents as New Zealand citizens at a ceremony held 3 December at the Wairarapa Events Centre.
Friends, whānau, and community members gathered to support the 16 individuals who formally joined the Aotearoa whānau. Originating from South Africa, England, Taiwan, the United States of America, Northern Ireland, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Scotland, the group brings a rich blend of cultures and stories to our district.
The ceremony was led by Mayor Steve Cretney, who congratulated the new New Zealanders on reaching this significant milestone.
“Citizenship represents a deep commitment to being part of our shared future,” he said. “It’s wonderful to see people from around the world choosing to put down roots here in the Wairarapa.”
A mihi whakatau and waiata was performed by Council staff to set the tone for an uplifting and distinctly Aotearoa celebration and welcome.
Each new citizen completed the Oath or Affirmation of Citizenship and received an official welcome message from the Governor-General before joining together to sing the national anthem. The formalities were followed by photos, kai, and time for mingling with fellow residents and supporters.
Carterton District Council extends its warmest congratulations to our newest citizens and looks forward to the contributions they will bring to our community.
