Carterton District Council held its inaugural meeting on Tuesday, 29 October, marking the beginning of the 2025–2028 triennium with a pōwhiri to manaaki our new Elected Members. Kōrero was shared by Mana Whenua representatives Joel Ngātuere (Ngāti Kahukuraawhitia) and PJ Devonshire (Hurunui-o-Rangi), acknowledging the significance of the occasion and the enduring partnership between Council and hapū. The Mayoral chains were passed on from former Mayor Hon. Ron Mark to new Mayor Steve Cretney. The special occasion was attended by friends, whānau, and community members who came to witness their representatives take the oath of office and begin their service to Carterton.

At the meeting, Councillor Grace Ayling was appointed Deputy Mayor for the new term.
Cr Ayling said she was honoured to take on the role and thanked the community for their strong participation in this year’s election.

“I’m pleased to announce I’ve just been supported by our Council table to be the new Deputy Mayor of Carterton District Council. Thank you to everyone who supported me and who voted for me in the last election,” she said.
“We had a great turnout of over 50% of voters, around 20% higher than the majority of New Zealand councils, a fantastic result. I look forward to representing you all for the next three years.”

Mayor Steve Cretney said the new Council represents a strong mix of experience, energy, and dedication to the Carterton community.

“I’m proud to lead a team who share a clear commitment to working together for the best possible future for Carterton,” he said.
“This next triennium will bring both opportunities and challenges, but with collaboration, respect and community focus at the centre of what we do, I’m confident we’ll continue building a place our people are proud to call home.”

During the meeting, councillors were also appointed to committees and advisory groups that will guide Council’s work over the next three years, including Risk and Assurance, Policy and Projects, Investment, and the Chief Executive Employment Review Committees. The Council also confirmed its appointments to Greater Wellington Regional Council committees and local advisory groups such as the Water Race Committee and Community Grants Committee.
