Carterton is a wonderful place to visit!

With wide open spaces, national forest parks, rivers, vineyards a beach and an eclectic mix of retail shopping and award winning cafes, there is something for everyone when staying in Carterton.

With the Carterton Events Centre offering world class shows, and large annual events being held within the town like the Daffodil Festival every spring, it provides a great excuse to book a few days and enjoy the friendly atmosphere of our small provincial town.

Camping & Freedom Camping

The Carterton District Freedom Camping Bylaw was adopted in 2023. The Bylaw makes it easier for campers to identify camping opportunities and restrictions in Carterton and help Council monitor and manage camping in the District.

There are no areas where camping can occur without restriction in Carterton District. Unrestricted camping on public land can have adverse effects on the environment, people’s health and safety, and access to public spaces. 

Kokotau River Reserve, Gladstone River Reserve, and The Cliffs Reserve

Campers may stay for a maximum of 21 nights stay to provide a sufficiently long stay but also allows area to be shared with other campers. Ablution facilities provided so self-contained vehicles not required.

All areas where camping is not identified as a specifically restricted or prohibited

Max 3 night stay to provide freedom camping opportunity, a short stay will ensure locations do not become permanent camping locations and adversely impact amenity in the area. Self-contained vehicle to ensure that waste is dealt with appropriately.

 

Camping Prohibited

  • Kaipaitangata Water Collection Reserve: Camping in this area poses risk to public water supply.
  • Carterton Township: Camping within residential area adversely affects residential amenity
  • Ngā Tāwhai Reserve: Camping in this area could damage establishing vegetation and cultural values.
  • Flat Point: Camping in the area adjacent to residential housing adversely affects residential amenity, the open coastal amenity, and access to the beach.
  • Areas on the periphery of Kokotau, Gladstone, and The Cliffs River Reserves.

Being centrally located within the Wairarapa, Carterton is an ideal location for exploring the entire region. Carterton is home to a range of events and entertainment throughout the year, including the annual Daffodil Festival and the Big Wai Art Sale.
