Historic Clareville Cemetery is located on Chester Road on the outskirts of Carterton.

Clareville Cemetery is located on Chester Road on the outskirts of Carterton, administered by Carterton District Council.

You will find the grave of Charles Rooking Carter, from whom Carterton derives its name, and other notable people there.

The first burial took place on 26 July 1866.

The Cemetery has its own small chapel which was opened in August 1999, the chapel features a stand crafted from local wood containing a memorial book.

A crematorium is also located within the cemetery, and with every cremation performed a native tree is planted.

The bylaw enables Council to control and set standards for the operation of cemeteries and crematoria within the District boundaries.

How do I arrange a funeral?

Generally, contact a funeral director to arrange a burial or cremation.

You will need a completed Application for the Right to Internment form. However, a funeral director can usually complete this on your behalf.

Memorial and floral tributes

A monument supplier can advise you on the memorial [e.g. headstones] options available.

A funeral director may supply you with a named plaque but this is considered only a temporary arrangement.

All upkeep of memorials is the responsibility of the owner.

Floral tributes are permitted only on the memorial headstone bases. Vase inserts may be provided for some cremation areas.

Flowers or shrubs may not be planted in lawn cemeteries.

When can I visit a cemetery?

All cemeteries have unrestricted visitor rights and vehicle access and parking is available at all sites. Gates will be locked to vehicles at Clareville at dusk.
