Candidate Statement

My principal place of residence is in the area.

Born into a deeply entrenched Carterton family with a history of community service, I’m now able to bring my experience, business acumen, and community knowledge to benefit the community of Carterton.

My working life has taken me to Carterton Borough Council, Wairarapa Stock Foods, sharemilking, and over 40 years as owner of Tower Gates. Younger family members are stepping up to take over our business, allowing me to dedicate more time to serving the community.

One of the major issues requiring scrutiny is the cost of rates, and as elected council representatives, we are tasked with achieving the best value for your dollar.

My forebears served Carterton as volunteers on the Council, Dalefield hockey club, the dairy industry, the development of East Taratahi training farm, and the Catchment Board. Like my family, I want to serve Carterton to recognise its potential and make it a positive force in the region.

I’m Steve Gallon and have been a Carterton resident all my life.

Have a long established family history with Carterton. and passionate about our council making the best decisions on behalf of our ratepayers.

Also over 40 years experience in running a business , which has included employing staff and financial management.

During that time . dealing with locals and customers over the length of the country.

Water storage has been talked about as a goal. in the Wairarapa for the last 35 years.

Carterton has started a project that now needs finishing.

Council has been instrumental in developing a water storage platform that will have financial roll down effects . and benefits to our ratepayers.

Also being very aware of the cost of rates. which effects us all , as a main priority. plus changes and improvements needed for our town centre.

These are some of the priority’s to focus on over the next few years.

Call it 3 Waters, or Local Water Done Well , successive governments push to set up a new combined entity, has been challenging for this council.

We do need to get the best outcome for Carterton.

This is a one off chance , requiring decisions never made before.

A positive challenge though , is that we have in place , substancial amounts of industrial land available , with the capacity to create jobs and grow our population.
