Candidate Statement

My principal place of residence is in the area. I am also standing for Mayor.

I have lived and worked in the Carterton District all my life and recently retired. I’m totally committed to the residents of our District.

After nine years on Council, I bring experience chairing several committees, representing Council on Wairarapa combined committees, and working on the Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Water Race system.

I’ve been involved in Water Reforms from the start, and in the Wairarapa Combined District Plan Review—valuable foundations for shaping our District’s future, where collaboration and change are inevitable.

Video transcript

I am a lifelong Carterton resident with 50 years experience working in the water industry in the Wairarapa.
I am a Lions club member of 33years, a Justice of the Peace for 9 years.

What I stand for.
I am committed to sticking to core infrastructure projects.
I will ensure a strong voice for our district for the best outcome on Local Water Done Well.
I will support initiatives to grow our local economy.
An open door policy. I will reopen the Mayors office, and be available when ever needed.
If elected as your new Mayor, I would like to build a cohesive council with councilors and staff to enable movement towards agreed goals and common purposes.
We will be finalising the Local water done well model, which will change the way council operates. I will ensure that this transition happens smoothly without disruption.
The subject of amalgamation of the three Wairarapa councils will also be on the agenda in the next three years.
The new councils have to research this and possibly do it our way, before it is mandated by central government.
The biggest challenge facing us a district is the restriction and operation of our council when Local water kicks in.
We will lose 40% of our operating revenue from water rates to the new entity.
This create some stranded overheads that will need to be managed progressively.
We will need to do this with minimal impact on the ratepayer.
The Central Government roading subsidies are decreasing. We need to be smart with monies in vested in roading and maintenance to ensure the best outcome for the funds available.
