Overview
Our Frederick Street Water Treatment Plant draws groundwater from three bores located at the end of Frederick Street along Lincoln Road. Before it reaches your taps, the water goes through a treatment process that includes ultraviolet (UV) light, chlorine disinfection, and pH correction.
All drinking water must be disinfected with chlorine and pH balanced to keep it safe from harmful bacteria. Our operators are exceptionally skilled and work carefully to ensure chlorine levels are able to be kept at or near the minimum dose to meet national standards – this helps reduce taste and odour. As you would expect, Carterton’s water consistently meets national Drinking Water Standards.
We’re currently making a number of upgrades at the plant, including a transition from caustic soda to a lime-based pH correction system. Lime is a more cost-effective and sustainable option, and we expect to make the switch in early 2026.
We’ve also recently upgraded our UV treatment system, boosting capacity and improving the resilience of Carterton’s water supply during heavy rain or periods of high demand.
Looking ahead, further improvements will focus on automation, replacing older components, and strengthening the plant’s safety and efficiency. We’ll keep you updated as this work progresses.
