What you will need to be eligible to vote in the 2022 Carterton Local Body Elections.

Ratepayer Elector?

Residential or ratepayer electoral roll?

Local body elections are held every 3 years. The elections are held under the provisions of the Local Electoral Act 2001, the Local Electoral Regulations 2001, and the Local Government Act 2002.
To vote in a local body election, you need to be enrolled on either the Residential or Ratepayer electoral roll.

Residential roll

You can enrol on the residential roll if you:

  • Are 18 years of age or older, and;
  • Are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, and;
  • Have lived in New Zealand continuously, at any time, for one year or more, and;
  • Have lived at your current address for more than one month.

Ratepayer roll

You are can enrol on the ratepayer roll if you:

  • Are a registered parliamentary elector; and
  • Are a non-resident ratepayer who has applied for enrolment on the ratepayer roll or, if you:
  • Live outside the Carterton District and have been nominated by a firm, company; corporation or society paying rates on a property in the District.

Voting in Elections

Local elections are your chance to vote for your local representative and to have a say in decisions that affect our whole community. They are held for city, district, regional councils and (in some parts of New Zealand) for community boards, licensing trusts, and some other organisations.

District Health Boards are no longer included in local elections because of changes currently underway to our health system.

In Carterton, our Council currently consists of the Mayor, and eight councillors. They are elected every three years.

The next local body elections are scheduled for Saturday 8 October 2022, by postal vote. It is important that you have your say in who represents you by voting in the local body elections.

If you have never enrolled to vote before, are 18 years or over, and a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand, enrol now.
