Two lovable dogs in Carterton District Council care are facing an uncertain future just two weeks out from Christmas.
CDC Animal Services are still taking care of two young female dogs, found in roaming Gladstone earlier this month.
One is a black Labret cross, and the other a brown Mastiff x Labret. Both are six months old.
“We’re seeking a Christmas miracle for our duo, and really hoping we can find them forever homes soon.
“The pound is the last resort for many dogs, and we have had success locating owners, or new families, in the past. We really want to get these dogs into a safe new home for the holidays.
“These dogs would make wonderful companions for the right families.
“Christmas is a time for giving, and what better gift than offering a home to an animal in need?” says a spokesperson for the pound.
In New Zealand, over 850,000 dogs live in households – that’s one in three homes in the country – reflecting our love for pets. However, each year, thousands of dogs are abandoned or surrendered to shelters. A report by Companion Animals New Zealand highlights that while many dogs find homes, there is significant pressure on rehoming centres as lifestyle changes lead to pet abandonment.
To control the population and ensure better outcomes for pets, experts recommend spaying or neutering. This prevents unwanted litters and reduces the strain on shelters. Additionally, owners should research breeds carefully and only adopt if they can commit to the lifelong care of a pet.
For those unable to care for their pets, shelters and rescue organisations offer solutions. “It’s vital to reach out to professional rehoming services instead of abandoning pets. There are always options,” the spokesperson adds.
The council urges people to consider adoption this holiday season.
“By giving these dogs a home, you’re not only saving a life but enriching your own.”
