UPDATE: 5 September 2023

Work continues on Te Wharau Road. Our objective is to reopen the road by Friday 15 September, pending favourable weather conditions.

The contractor has recently completed the installation of a deep carrier drain on the road’s shoulder, a critical measure designed to effectively manage groundwater levels, particularly during the winter season.

Our assessment has revealed that the road’s previous failure was primarily attributed to excessive saturation – i.e. heavy water during the winter.

The repair procedure involves the strategic placement of a geotextile layer between the pavement layers, thus mitigating the potential for future horizontal stress induced by traffic and other contributing factors.

Additionally, we will incorporate weep holes to facilitate the drainage of water from the pavement, further enhancing the road’s resilience. To provide vertical stability and support, a vertical structure will be installed along the edge of Te Wharau Road, effectively preventing vertical movement.

We understand the inconvenience that such closures may cause, and we appreciate your continued understanding and cooperation as we work to resolve this situation.
