Everyone at Carterton District Council was saddened by the fire on High St this morning, says Greg Lang, Mayor of Carterton.

“Our team members know those businesses so well, as they are so close to our offices, yard and Events Centre. They are part of the everyday life of our town.

“We particularly feel for the community and the business owners who are really struggling at this time to deal with earthquake-prone buildings, legislation, and strengthening, and also the effects of Covid-19.

“We are a resilient town and I know there is plenty of support for the building owner.

“Our District’s Volunteer Fire Brigade, supported by colleagues from across the region, did an excellent job in making sure the damage did not spread even wider.

“On behalf our community, Carterton District Council has set up an online fundraiser to show our support at this difficult time.

“We would also like to acknowledge Go Carterton, the local business group, for their offer of support to the business owners too.

“Please feel free to contact me or Carterton District Council if you can help those impacted.

“Kia kaha Carterton.”
