The Carterton Events Centre team are thrilled to partner with Gawith Burridge to bring Susie Miller’s smash hit play Prima Facie to our stage.

Prima Facie is the story of Tessa, a criminal defence lawyer at the top of her game and loving it: defending, cross-examining, and playing the rules of the law to win. But when the tables turn, she finds herself at the mercy of the very system she dedicated her life to. Shadows of doubt are illuminated, making us question, who is our legal system serving?

Prima Facie has been a huge hit all over the world. This production, starring award-winning actress Mel Dodge and directed by New Zealand theatre legend Lyndee Jane Rutherford, is no exception.

It is now on tour across the country fresh from a sold-out season at Wellington’s Circa Theatre.

The tour, produced by Kavanah Productions, will headline major festivals, as well as a run at Centrepoint Theatre in Palmerston North, and a return season at Circa Theatre.

Carterton Events Centre Team Leader Erin Banks said her team are delighted to be working with Gawith Burridge to bring such an important work to Wairarapa.

Prima Facie is a one-woman masterpiece. It aims to shift perspectives and question what’s black and white in the eyes of justice.

“We are so grateful to Gawith Burridge, a prestigious local law firm who are keen to support the arts in Wairarapa, making it possible for us to bring top quality work to our region.”

Gawith Burridge Partner Michelle Williams said the partnership of Gawith Burridge are passionate about supporting access to the arts in the regions.

“For the Partners of Gawith Burridge, sponsoring a production like this was a no brainer,” said Michelle, who is also chair of the Aratoi Patrons Trust.

“It’s crucial to keep the arts alive in our region, and this is a play with an incredibly important message about sexual assault and the imbalance of power, not just for the legal world, but for everyone”.

“I was also bitterly disappointed to have missed out on the Wellington production as it sold out so quickly – so I’m excited to have the opportunity to see it locally!”

Prima Facie will perform at the Carterton Events Centre on Friday 26 April. Tickets for the performance will be on sale from Monday 26 February via the Events Centre box office and website www.cartertonec.co.nz.
