Waste Water

Carterton District Council is moving into a new phase of a long-term plan to improve the treatment of urban waste water in a sustainable way. Its vision is to improve fresh water quality by removing treated effluent from streams.

Urban residents can help reduce the amount of water and pollutants going into the wastewater system by:

  • Conserving water throughout the household
  • Making sure downpipes are not illegally connected to the sewerage system
  • Ensuring low-lying gully traps are raised above ground level
  • Carefully disposing of wipes, nappies, sanitary goods, chemicals, fats, oils, medicines, plastics; through means other than the wastewater system
  • Using phosphate-free detergent

Several new initiatives are underway to reduce effluent discharged into the Mangatarere Stream to improve water quality:

  • Consent to irrigate treated wastewater onto Council-owned land (Daleton Farm) adjacent to the Wastewater Treatment Plant was issued by the Regional Council in October 2014.  Read more
  • Native shelter plants and a Pinus Radiata windbreak around Daleton Farm which will be irrigated with drip-lines when necessary.
  • A new ultraviolet (UV) treatment plant commissioned in October 2014 has improved the quality of water discharged to both the stream and land.
  • Replanting of the treatment plant’s wetlands which allow further treatment of bacteria.

Working with our community

Council is working with the community through a Community Liaison Group (CLG) to receive and provide information and feedback to community members on the treatment and disposal of waste water.  The group’s terms of reference can be found here

The community is also closely involved in helping restore the Mangatarere Stream through the Mangatarere Restoration Society
